#2 Electricity

A vintage Edison light bulb bursts with dramatic blue electrical arcs in a rustic workshop setting.

Now, I will move on to talk about our third technology that has contributed to the development of human beings – electricity. Did you know that the invention of electricity was a full of unintentional experimental results? It is thought that the humans’ interests towards electricity was evolved with lightnings on the sky. Zeus is one of the most famous Greek god that controls lightning, thunder and the sky. Romantic enough, some people also imagined that lightnings occur as a result of attraction of two clouds, bounded with love.

However, it was not until late 17th century that humans discovered electricity, and in the 18th century, humans started producing electricity by themselves. Thanks to Alessandro Volta, humans became capable of using electricity anywhere we wanted to, leading to invention of electric motors by Michael Faraday and invention of a light bulb by Thomas Edison (Edison used a baboo taken in Japan for the filament of his light bulb). Nowadays, we walk through towns under warm and cozy lamps in the evening, we enjoy night time under neon lights in cities, and we use electric devices for our entertainments.

The comprehension of mechanism of how electricity works has hugely contributed to the medical field too. Luigi Galvani accidentally realized that a frog leg, which he was using for other purposes, reacted to nearby electricity. Starting at that moment, understanding of how human nervous systems work was deepened. These days, the AEDs utilizes electricity to stimulate unfunctional hearts to move properly, muscles can be stimulated through electric flows, and some hot springs (onsen) in Japan has what is called a electric bath, where people enjoy the stimulus of electricity through hot water.

It is notable that how electricity has contributed to the development of human society. Without electricity, it is almost impossible to live normally. This is why a shut down of electricity in the emergence of disaster sometimes covers the top news of the day – people are hugely dependent on electricity that the inaccessibility of electricity matters a lot.

As explored today, electricity can be the most significant discovery in the human history. Definitely, AI and smart devices will not work without electricity. I would like to explore another human discovery next day.

Please feel free to leave a comment on how much electricity matters for you. The cost for electricity is expected to increase due to the war between the US and Iran, possibly having a deteriorating effect on budget of people.

See you next day.
